“That went well, don’t you think?” Doctor Hamilton asked, after he and Grace stepped out into the hallway.

One of the many things that Grace enjoyed about Comfort Cares Cottage was the lighting. Lamps in the treatment room provided soft, warm light in the evenings, when patients who were staying overnight wished to read or visit with loved ones. During the day, windows let in natural sunlight. There was none of that harsh florescent lighting that Grace had grown so used to, in other healthcare settings. The hallway was no exception. A window on the far end let in some of the early-afternoon sunlight, and one standing lamp in a shallow alcove, near a potted fern, provided the rest of the space’s light.

Grace pulled the door to the treatment room closed, and spoke in a hushed tone. “Yes, very well,” she said. “I was concerned because she really didn’t look that rested, to me. Those dark circles under her eyes…”

“I agree,” Doc Ham said with a nod. “I knew she wasn’t in a good state right when I walked in, this morning. I really did hope that her night of sleep would help, but that doesn’t seem to be the case. I’m glad we went ahead with the surgery, though. She needed it. The ligaments and tendons in there were not happy campers.”

Grace knew better than to press the doctor for a more scientific explanation of Maddie’s injury. The place where medicine and magic intersected remained a mystery to her, and she felt certain that it would for many years to come.

Each time she had the great honor of being in the room with the doctor when he performed a magical surgery, she felt filled with awe. There was never a scalpel, clamp, or suture in sight. Light flowed from the doctor’s hands during these magical procedures, and he often murmured strange and foreign words while he worked. It was all beyond Grace, and despite the fact that she’d witnessed a half-dozen of these mysterious, magical surgeries, the experience still made her feel a bit weak in the knees and light in the head.

There was a small sink in the hallway, and Doc Ham paused at it to wash his hands. While Grace waited her turn at the sink, she said, “I hope her recovery goes smoothly. I’m worried about her.”

“Me too, to be honest.” The doctor finished scrubbing, and reached for a paper towel. “I get the feeling that the pain in her ankle is only part of the problem. The procedure I just performed -- repairing the tears, connecting the fibers and whatnot -- has fixed her ankle joint. But I think it’s her heart that’s really hurting her.”

“You think she has a cardiac issue?” Grace said. She briskly dried her hands, and she felt her own pulse pick up. There were few things her nursing training had instilled in her as heavily as the ABC’s -- airway, breathing, and circulation. These were the top three critical concerns to keep in mind when triaging patient needs.
